When the Newport Beach, California’s favorite mutant wave is on, it takes no prisoners. Even at its best, if a surfer can make it out of one barrel during a session at the Wedge, it was a good day in the water. Most of the time it’s closeouts and worse, absolute poundings on the sand. That’s just the way it works at this spot.
The south swell season has begun. And that means the action at the Wedge is heating up, with more and more wave riders lining up to take a beating in hopes of one glorious ride. That’s why I dug this footage out of the archives. The Wedge wasn’t giving out any free passes on this morning from August, 2020. Enjoy a classic day at the famed Wedge. This is how most surfers experience it.
